BNSF Slashes Jobs at Burlington, Interbay, and Topeka shops
1/23/2003
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) has eliminated more than 300 jobs at it locomotive shops in Burlington, Iowa; Seattle, Washington; and Topeka, Kansas.

BNSF cut 248 of the 388 jobs in Burlington and 64 of the 367 jobs at its Topeka shops, citing a lack of locomotive repair work. BNSF also cut 20 of 105 jobs at its Interbay shops in Seattle. All cuts were effective immediately.

The job cuts occurred as BNSF continues to study a possible consolidation of its shops in Topeka or Burlington. The study is expected to be completed this year.

A BNSF spokesman said fewer job were cut in Topeka because it maintains General Electric DC-powered locomotives. The Burlington shops maintain AC-powered locomotives, which are less numerous on the BNSF.
